At the end of an 8 week European adventure the Smallwoods spent 11 days in Italy. Travelling with 2 kids aged 11 and 9, Italy left quite an impression on them.

After arriving in Venice by plane we instantly fell in love with the beauty and ambience of this floating city. Everything about Venice was amazing. Something unique around every corner. Its full of tourists and the market stalls were a great place for browsing. Our first Italian pizza was nothing short of spectacular! We visited Murano Island where watching glass blowing was fascinating.

After 3 days in Venice we caught a train down to Florence. This city is full of history and the architecture is beautiful. Mr 9 was quite fascinated with Michangelo’s David. The leather goods shopping was such good value and we bought an extra suitcase to bring it home! We also did a pizza and gelato making course which was a highlight of our entire trip.

Leaning Tower of Pisa

Leaning Tower of Pisa

We took a train out to Pisa and we were glad we spent the time going to see the Leaning Tower. It has to be seen to be believed! I couldn’t bring myself to walk up it though as you walk up with no railings.

Onto Rome again via train. Rome is busy and hot! A visit to the Colosseum was really interesting and a must do. A tour through the Vatican was also a must do although a bit long for kids looking at paintings and sculptures. Wandering around to the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Stairs we found great food and fabulous shopping!

Italy has the best gelato and pizza. The food here is amazing and don’t even think about dieting! Don’t pack much as you need space for leather goods and shoes. We would love to go back and see more of Italy.
