By the time the first Briton entered the Serengeti in 1913, the Maasai had already been grazing their livestock on the plains for over 200 years. To combat the hunting of lions, which was rife at the time, the British transformed 800 acres of the plains into a game reserve. In 1951 the Serengeti National Park was established, and its native wildlife has flourished.
